AWAODORI
Obon is an annual Buddhist holiday that honors one's ancestors. During obon, it is believed that each year the ancestors' spirits return to this world in order to visit their relatives. This festival has grown to become more of time when families come together for a holiday reunion. Lanterns are traditionally hung in front of houses so that these can allow ancestors' spirits can be guided home; obon dances (bon odori) are performed; and
relatives visit their ancestors' graves and offer food to altars and temples. At the end of Obon, floating lanterns are put into rivers, lakes and seas in order to guide the spirits back into their world.

Obon is typically observed from July 13th - 15th, the solar calendar's 7th month. However, according to the formerly used lunar calendar the 7th month of the year roughly coincides with August rather than July. Therefore in many regions of Japan Obon it is still celebrated in mid August. In mid August the Obon week is one of Japan's three major holiday seasons which results in peak travel time both domestically and internationally. Between August 11 and 15, 2007 is anticipated to be the peak travel season for the Obon travel season. You will notice that accommodation rates are not only increased during this time but may also be very difficult to find availability, especially while booking less than 60 days in advance.
